I am trying to run at least two devices for connecting with Nextcloud on my Hetzner-Server (your-storageshare.de).
I managed to run the Nextcloud Linux client and it works perfectly, connected to an external 1TB SSD: Everything I add to this device will be synced to Nextcloud and vice versa. I even could disclose some folders from being connected.
However, on my mobile device (Samsung Galaxy A52s) I want to sync an existing folder /music/ with the same named folder in Nextcloud. Both have the same naming, both have 55G of data in it. Of course, the Nextcloud Android client is installed on the mobile device. I just don’t get how to connect both /music/ folders to each other so they get synchronized automatically once I change - let’s say - a tag for an MP3 file on my Linux machine.
Gratefully taking any hints for this request. Thanks!
To sync the /music/ folder between your Linux machine and your Samsung Galaxy A52s:
Install Nextcloud App: Ensure the Nextcloud app is installed and connected on your phone.
Sync Folder on Mobile: In the app, go to the /music/ folder on your server, tap the three dots, and select “Make Available Offline” to sync it to your phone.
Ensure Sync on Linux: On your Linux machine, ensure the Nextcloud desktop client is syncing the /music/ folder.
This way, both devices will sync the /music/ folder automatically.
Thanks for the explanation, @anon81630622, I very appreciate it. However, that was ways too easy
First, it says “Synchronize” in my case instead of “Make Available Offline”, obviously due to translation issues.
Second: I don’t get any immediate feedback; it just takes a while (for calculation purposes?) before I see anything up- or downloading. Of course, I tried this before and stopped it again as apparently nothing happened (in my eyes).
Third, and I am still wondering about while there is something going on on my smartphone: Why would Nextcloud know with which /music/ folder I want to synchronize? As far as I know, I never connected any specific folder on my mobile to Nextcloud so I am afraid it stores all that 55G anywhere on my phone for offline availability but to my specific /music/ folder on my SD card, right?
Alright then. Turns out that what I actually had in mind is not possible with the Nextcloud mobile app as it cannot be connected to any arbitrary folder that I defined. Instead, the Nextcloud mobile app will use some self-defined folder on the mobile phone’s internal storage and this way, will clutter it with my 55G of music.
To clean it up, go to the /music/ folder in Nextcloud mobile app, tap the three dots again and choose delete. There will be a prompt so you can delete just the local stuff on your mobile phone, not the entire folder in the cloud.
The real solution is an external app FolderSync (you can also go for the pro version). FolderSync is able to connect to your Nextcloud server with your credentials. You simply create a pair of folders to be synced, adjust time and options and off you go.
