Cannot open main dialog on Linux

Last fall, after an update I started experiencing an issue where the nextcloud client would not show up after launching. At that time I was still able to downgrade to an older version, and continue using nextcloud. However, eventually I had to upgrade to the problematic version, and the client has not worked for me since. This happened in the midst of an international move and I didnā€™t have time to document what was going on or address it properly until now.

Recently, I installed a standalone system tray, and I see the nextcloud icon appearing there. I can access the ā€˜settingsā€™ window through the right-click menu, but when I click ā€œOpen main dialogā€ nothing happens. I see no errors logged in the console. So there is something preventing the main dialog from opening.

I am experiencing this on both my Linux machines, which use the same OS and graphical environment: Gentoo and dwm window manager.

I rely on nextcloud to synchronize files between many machines I use for work, so not being able to use nextcloud is a pretty big problem. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

And even if the main dialog issue canā€™t be fixed, is there a way to configure the client through the command line?

Hi,
did you try Appimage?
Check whether it has the same problem as your standalone version or not.

Great idea, thanks! Iā€™m not able to find the appimage anywhere, but I will keep looking.

I can only say it works fine on Arch and Fedora in Gnome, both with 3.15.3.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with either dwm or Gentoo, and unless one of the developers of the Nextcloud client is using this combination on their personal computer, I doubt it has actually been tested on such a system.

So if you donā€™t get any answers here, your best bet is probably to ask in the relevant support channels/forums if someone has experienced the same issue and has found a solution for it.

If not, you could create a debug log archive and hopefully find out what is causing the problem and fix it yourself: Appendix C: Troubleshooting ā€” Nextcloud Client Manual 3.15.3 documentation

If that doesnā€™t work out either, you can always open an issue on GitHub. But be aware that Nextcloud only packages the AppImage, so if you are using Portage on Gentoo, you should probably report it there first, or the issue could also be specific to bwm, in which case you should report it there as well.

So it runs fine with the appimage  I should have thought of this earlier probably, but thanks very much for the tip.

I will probably raise an issue with the maintainer for my distro, but for now I suppose I can use the appimage. I would have earlier, but when I went to do so I saw that for runtime issues they suggest reporting the issue upstream.

Much appreciated again guys.

I use CachyOS (KDE) on 3 devices.
The repozitory client 3.15.3 is working fine for me as well.
