Cannot launch the Nextcloud files client on Windows 11 at all

Hi, and thank you for reading my post.

The Basics

  • Nextcloud Server version (e.g., 29.x.x):
    • not relevant
  • Operating system and version (e.g., Ubuntu 24.04):
    • not relevant
  • Web server and version (e.g, Apache 2.4.25):
    • not relevant
  • Reverse proxy and version _(e.g. nginx 1.27.2)
    • not relevant
  • PHP version (e.g, 8.3):
    • not relevant
  • Is this the first time you’ve seen this error? (Yes / No):
    • yes
  • When did this problem seem to first start?
    • when I tried installing the desktop on a new Windows 11 computer
  • Installation method (e.g. AlO, NCP, Bare Metal/Archive, etc.)
    • not relevant
  • Are you using CloudfIare, mod_security, or similar? (Yes / No)
    • not relevant

Summary of the issue you are facing:

I cannot launch the Nextcloud client AT ALL. After the installation, or if I try to launch it directly. Nothing happens. No window, nothing. I only see the Windows mouse shifting to its rolling form for a bit, then back to normal.

I am using an up to date Windows 11 provided by my enterprise (NB: my use of Nextcloud is personnal). However I was able to use Nextcloud fine on a previous computer provided by the company, although I installed it back on Windows 10 (and it continued to work after upgrading to Windows 11).

I did not even get to the part where I write in the Nextcloud server instance I want to use.

Steps to replicate it:

  1. Install the official Nextcloud files clients on Windows 11 normally, not changing any default options
  2. Try to launch the client afterwards simply by clicking on the executable or the desktop link
  3. (nothing happens)

Log entries

I do not seem to have any kind of logs. There is no Nextcloud folder in the C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local or Roaming directories.

What I have though are crashdumps in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\CrashDumps like e.g. nextcloud.exe.24200.dmp. If I need to share any, please provide me with a trusted and non public way to deliver it as I cannot read any of its content.

I will not have any logs on the server side either as I never wrote my nextcloud instance information.

Any lead as of how to investigate further would be welcomed.

Cheers!

What version of the client?

You can try starting with --logwindow which will give you a link to the logging folder to open (if it’s getting that far). See here.

Hi. I launched the client using 'C:\Program Files\Nextcloud\nextcloud.exe' --logwindow and, to my surprise the window showed up! to reproduce the issue I tried completely closing Nextcloud and launching it again normally… and it worked too. So I have no idea what changed between my first tries and this one, sorry.
This could be linked to some local proxy configuration (given that I am using a corporate laptop), but even then the client should at least launch and show an appropriate error when the first web requests are sent.
Anyway, thank you for your help.

Odd. Not sure. I saw one vague report (that the reporter closed out just after reporting) that was somewhat similar, but that’s it recently.
