Android client app isn't connecting to Nextcloud server

I have not been getting my photos uploading since May. Debian just moved v13 into stable so I upgraded my server, only to find it broke v28 of Nextcloud (couldn’t handle the update to php8.4). Rather than fighting with intermediate upgrades, I decided to simply install the latest nextcloud version (31).

That’s working but now my Android app isn’t connecting. My phone is a little old (Samsung Galaxy S8) running Android v8 but the app installs OK. In fact, I even uninstalled it, rebooted and installed a fresh copy.

However, when I launch it and try to connect to my nextcloud server, it never completes. It launches my browser for the login, which works, and I grant access to the device, but the nextcloud app just stays on the “Please complete login process in your browser” page, with a spinning graphic apparently indicating something. It never goes any further.

Any ideas?

Nevermind. It took over an hour but it finally progressed. When the warning above said the first run might be slow, I had no idea they meant this slow.
